Caleb and Catherine are abusive toward one another. This is a demeaning and ultimately vile comparison. Michael, on the other hand, is a level-headed straight shooter, guiding Caleb through his conversion. Women in the hospital where Catherine works are shown to gossip behind her back and "follow their heart." In other words, advocate for divorce. The difference present on screen is one of contempt for anyone who doesn't share their value system. Michael, Caleb's parents) and those who don't (any female who counsels Catherine). Alex (director and co-writer) and Stephen Kendrick (co-writer) claim they want to show the difference between advisors who walk with God (ie.

Portrayal of females in the movie is problematic as well: none get the respect they deserve from the story. A smile means nothing with a vacant stare or devil horns inching closer to the surface. Even in her scenes with a young doctor (Perry Revell), she brings the same level of warmth that she does when speaking to Caleb.

And as he prepares a candlelight dinner for her, she says there is no love for him anymore. As he washes her car and cleans up the house, she has no positive reinforcement for him. When he pours Catherine a cup of coffee in the morning, she brushes it off. It isn't that much of a stretch to see why these two don't get along. An arrogant jerk, Caleb is stuck on himself to the detriment of the marriage. She comes off as shrewish, uncompromising and unreasonable, especially in regard to Caleb. Leading lady Bethea can't muster the emotion to portray the character the script gives her. With the exception of Ken Bevel as Caleb's friend and fire lieutenant Michael, the acting is sub-standard. Its first disadvantage is a reliance on congregation members to play against Cameron. Messages aside, Fireproof isn't very good. I can't be the only one who feels if someone needs to have the literal fear of God put into them to act in a rational, common sense kind of way, they don't deserve to be married in the first place. Each page of the glorified "how-to" book ends with a bible verse, showing this is how God wants people to treat one another. Again, all good examples of marriage lessons for couples of any faith. For example, day one challenges Caleb not to say anything mean to Catherine, even if provoked. The Love Dare details steps either spouse can take for 40 days in an effort to demonstrate how much they care their partner. Remove God and the religious imagery and a leaner, more accessible relationship drama remains. So the film is left preaching to the choir.

There will also be people who follow this faith who tune out because of the heavy-handed plot. See, when a controversial subject like faith is the centerpiece of a film, a certain segment of the audience is going to be turned off (the ones who believe in something else). There is no compelling reason for the story to be completely wrapped up in religion or the bible, aside from the fact the movie was produced by a church, shot in homes and on land owned by church members and had all the supporting parts played by those same people. The issue with Fireproof is that, like so many other niche productions, it preaches to the choir instead of making an effort at opening its arms to all audiences.

When Catherine begins divorce proceedings, Caleb turns to the one person he can trust - his father (Harris Malcom) - who in turn gives him The Love Dare, a book they both hope will get the marriage back on track. She believes he doesn't do enough around the house he doesn't get the respect he deserves. His home life is another story, as Caleb and his wife Catherine (Erin Bethea) are constantly at odds with one another. Problems arise as the story preaches instead of entertains and the largely amateur cast spouts every bible verse they can get their hands on.Ĭaleb Holt (Kirk Cameron) is a respected fire captain also known as a hero in his community. It isn't necessarily a faulty idea, especially considering the rather niche market the producers were hoping to court. The film would have us believe that without His presence in a relationship, it is doomed to fail. Fireproof desperately wants the audience to buy into a simple premise: the only way to have a successful, lasting marriage is to give yourself to God, specifically the Christian world view.
